The Diamond Heels scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on their way to a 13-3 win against visiting Bucknell at Boshamer Stadium Tuesday. Carolina won the game in seven innings via the 10-run rule, marking the teams eighth win by way of the run rule already this season.
Macon Winslow provided the highlight of the afternoon early by blasting a two-run home run 427 feet over the left-center field wall and giving UNC a 2-0 lead. But the Diamond Heels did most of their damage with the bat on their shoulders, drawing 12 total walks compared to just nine hits. Winslow and Paulsen combined to draw six of those free passes, and that pair scored seven of UNC’s 13 runs.
It was a Winslow walk which started Carolina’s eight-run rally in the seventh. Bucknell had hung tough and trailed 5-3, but the Bison loaded the bases with just one out after Owen Hull singled and Tyler Howe was hit by a pitch. Bucknell was an out away from escaping the jam, but a walk, another hit batsman and a wild pitch scored three UNC run without the ball leaving the infield. Two more walks, including another from Winslow in his second plate appearance of the inning, scored two more runs.
Hull came to bat again and drove in two runs with a single, and a Colin Hynek single in the next at-bat scored UNC’s 13th run to end the game. Carolina’s entire rally had come with two outs, and only three of the eight runs scored on hits.
On the mound, Walker McDuffie earned the win for UNC with three innings of scoreless relief. He allowed only two baserunners and struck out four.
Carolina is now 14-3-1 on the season. Up next, the Diamond Heels will head west for a three-game series against Cal in Berkeley. It will be the first ever meeting between the two sides as ACC foes. First pitch of Friday’s opening game is scheduled for 9 p.m. Eastern time.
