The UNC men’s basketball got more good news on Friday, as rising senior guard R.J. Davis announced he would return to Chapel Hill next season.

“I wanted to honor the commitment I made to my mom to earn a degree,” Davis told UNC Athletics’ Adam Lucas. “And I also wanted to recommit to Carolina and be the leader I know I can be. Last season did not end the way I wanted.”

Though Davis’ Tar Heels missed the NCAA Tournament, the junior from White Plains, N.Y. still performed well down the stretch. He scored in double figures in each of Carolina’s last six games, including a 24-point showing against Virginia in the season-ending loss in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals. During that six-game stretch, Davis shot 52.8 percent from the floor and 47.1 percent on three-pointers, appearing to finally shake a nagging finger injury which had bothered him all season long.

Davis is the second Carolina starter to confirm his return next season, after rising fifth-year center Armando Bacot did so earlier in the week. With Leaky Black and Pete Nance out of collegiate eligibility, rising senior guard Caleb Love is the only Tar Heel starter who has not confirmed his plans for next year.
