Jerry Stackhouse appears to be headed back to the NBA.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Saturday that the former UNC star has agreed to an assistant coaching position with the Memphis Grizzlies. The news comes after Stackhouse reportedly interviewed with three NBA teams in the last few months for their head-coaching positions. Instead, he will become an assistant to the Grizzlies’ new head coach, J.B. Bickerstaff.
Stackhouse earned national attention after leading the Toronto Raptors’ D-League team, Toronto 905, to a title in 2017. He was awarded D-League Coach of the Year honors for his work, despite it being his first year as a head coach. In two seasons with Toronto 905, Stackhouse holds a 70-30 record.
This is not Stackhouse’s first time coaching in the NBA. The two-time All-Star was part of the Raptors’ coaching staff in 2015 before taking his head coach position in the D-League.
Stackhouse excelled at UNC, becoming a consensus All-American and leading the Tar Heels to a Final Four in 1995. He entered the NBA Draft following his sophomore season and was drafted third overall to the Philadelphia 76ers. Stackhouse, 43, went on to play for eight teams over 18 years before retiring in 2013.
