A late fourth-quarter goal from visiting Denver was the difference in a 9-8 loss for the UNC men’s lacrosse team on Saturday. The goal finished off what had been a back-and-forth game at Dorrance Field and sent the Tar Heels to their second loss of the season.

The Pioneers took their biggest lead at 6-3 midway through the second quarter, but Carolina got back into the game on the stroke of halftime, as a Sean Goldsmith goal hit the net as time expired to draw the Tar Heels to within 6-5. Logan McGovern then tied the game early in the third quarter, and though Denver answered back late in the period, Carolina then took the lead with two unanswered goals in the fourth. Antonio DeMarco swung the game in UNC’s favor with 3:24 remaining, giving the Tar Heels their first lead of the day at 8-7.

But Denver responded in force, tying the game again less than a minute later and then taking the lead with 1:23 left. Carolina wasn’t able to get a shot off in the final 83 seconds.

Both of UNC’s losses this season have come when the team hasn’t reached the 10-goal plateau. In their three wins, the Tar Heels are averaging 18 goals per game. In their two losses, that average dips to just 7.5 goals per game.

Carolina will be back in action on Saturday, March 11 against Brown at Dorrance Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
