Payton Wilson, the former Orange High School star linebacker who recently flipped his college commitment from UNC to NC State, is reportedly likely to redshirt this upcoming season after a setback in his recovery from a torn ACL suffered this past fall.
The news was first reported by Joe Giglio of the News & Observer, although NC State has not put out any official statements.
Wilson was hurt on the opening kickoff of Orange’s ninth game of the season, a play that ended his high school career. Prior to that play, the four-star prospect had racked up 103 tackles and 10 sacks.
At 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, Wilson’s skills and physical makeup earned him the No. 79 overall spot in the 24/7Sports Composite Rankings for the Class of 2018.
Before decomitting from UNC this past fall, he was projected to be the Tar Heels’ top incoming recruit on the defensive side of the ball.
