Due to lack of participation, Cedar Ridge High School announced on August 4 that it will not field a varsity football team and instead only play junior varsity.

“Our intention was to play varsity football this year,” Cedar Ridge athletic director Andy Simmons told 97.9 The Hill. “When the schedules were turned in, that was our intention.”

The News & Observer recently posted a list of local high school football schedules, in which Cedar Ridge was included. Simmons confirmed, however, the Red Wolves will not play that schedule in the fall.

The Red Wolves went 0-6 during the spring football season in 2021, and during the offseason brought in Torrean Hinton as their new head coach. He previously served as the school’s interim head coach in 2019.

Around 20 players showed up to the team’s initial practice this season, according to a report by Hillsborough Sports.

“The hope was there that we would have enough players,” Hinton said. “I kept my ear close to what was going on. I knew that they had only about 12 kids in the weight room. So I knew what I was walking into as far as numbers go. It’s an uphill battle, but it’s one that I welcome.”

This is the second time in four years that Cedar Ridge will not field a varsity team, as it did not do so in 2018 as well. It is the third Orange County high school to not play varsity football in recent years, as Chapel Hill High did not in 2018 and East Chapel Hill High did not in 2017 or in the 2021 spring season.
