The No. 1 UNC field hockey team improved to 11-0 on the season Sunday at No. 12 Connecticut, and its star forward made some history in the process. Erin Matson scored two of UNC’s three goals in the 3-0 win, tying the career ACC scoring record with 306 points (goals and assists).

The win is Carolina’s fifth shutout in its last seven games, and is already the team’s sixth road win of the season.

Matson didn’t waste much time getting on the scoresheet, putting the Tar Heels in front just 5:41 into the game on a long-range shot. The 1-0 advantage held until early in the fourth quarter, when Matson struck again on a penalty stroke to double the lead. The goals were her 15th and 16th of the season. No other Tar Heel has more than seven.

Freshman Ryleigh Heck put the icing on the cake with one more goal midway through the final period.

The Tar Heels are still the only unbeaten team remaining in Division 1 field hockey. The team is hoping to get back to Connecticut later on in the fall, as UConn’s campus will host this year’s field hockey Final Four.

UNC is now finished with a stretch of six of seven games being played on the road. The team’s next three games will all come in the friendly confines of Karen Shelton Stadium, the first coming against No. 11 Syracuse on October 14 at 3 p.m.
