Already renowned for her abilities on the field, UNC field hockey superstar Erin Matson is now being recognized for her achievements in the classroom. The ACC announced Monday that Matson and Louisville’s Alli Bitting were the sport’s Co-Scholar Athletes of the Year in the conference. Coincidentally, Matson and Bitting were also the conference’s Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year for the 2021 season.

Matson, a media and journalism major at Carolina, is the fourth Tar Heel to be named Scholar Athlete of the Year in program history. She joins seven of her teammates on the All-ACC Field Hockey Academic Team, including vice captain Cassie Sumfest and senior Eva Smolenaars, who is also a media and journalism major.

Candidates for Scholar Athlete of the Year must have maintained a 3.0 GPA for the entirety of their playing careers, as well as a 3.0 for the previous two semesters.

Matson is coming off a 2021 season in which she set both the UNC and ACC career records in goals scored. Despite missing three full games due to injury, Matson still led the nation in goals and total points. In Carolina’s run to the ACC Tournament championship, Matson set a tournament record by amassing 14 points in three games. She has one year of eligibility left for NCAA competition.
