Maggie Shealy, a graduate of East Chapel Hill High School now competing as a fencer for Brandeis University, won a national title in the women’s sabre event at the 2024 NCAA Fencing Championships on Friday. Shealy is first woman in the history of Brandeis to win an individual NCAA title, the 27th student-athlete overall to do so and the first to do so in fencing.

Shealy is also just the second woman from an NCAA Division III school to win a title at the fencing championships. She entered Friday’s competition as the top-ranked fencer in the field after compiling a 12-3 record in the first three rounds of action. She defeated fencers from Columbia and St. John’s in the semifinals and finals.

Shealy, a senior at Brandeis, graduated from East Chapel Hill High in 2019. This year marked her third appearance at the NCAA Fencing Championships. She placed third overall in 2023.

East Chapel Hill is one of three local high schools which competes in the North Carolina Fencing League. Chapel Hill High School and Orange High School also participate in the league.
