Read the descriptions of the Bulls vs. Sounds games from the past week below, as they were shared on the Durham Bulls website and MiLB.com.
The Durham Bulls began the series with an authoritative 7-2 victory, featuring some impressive hits and plenty of heaters coming off the pitcher’s mound from veteran Tyler Glasnow.
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow struck out nine of sixteen batters faced in four shutout innings as part of his Major League Rehab Assignment with the Bulls, while Durham second baseman Vidal Brujan, first baseman Jonathan Aranda and center fielder Kameron Misner all homered and combined to drive in five runs in a 7-2 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday evening at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Glasnow (4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 SO) yielded just three hits and one walk while striking out nine batters in his third start with the Bulls as part of his Major League Rehab Assignment. Combined, he has not allowed a run in his 7.1 frames, adding 14 punchouts over those three starts with Durham.
…
Brujan (2-5, R, HR, 2 RBI), Aranda (2-3, R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, BB) and Misner (2-4, 2 R, HR, RBI) all recorded multi-hit efforts for the Bulls, combining for six hits, including three big flies, and five runs driven in. SS Osleivis Basabe clubbed a single in the third to extend his hit streak to a 2023 team-best nine games.
With one victory under their belt, the Bulls kept the good times rolling with a 4-0 shutout in game two.
Bulls short stop Vidal Brujan homered for the third straight game, and four Durham pitchers combined to allow only one hit in the 4-0 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Wednesday evening at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Catcher Rene Pinto scored on an error in the second inning before Brujan’s homer extended the lead to 2-0 in the following inning. Center fielder Greg Jones and Brujan would each hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to solidify the Bulls’ win.
Game three, however, saw a strong shift in the Sounds’ favor, with an 8-4 victory meaning the Bulls’ first loss of the series.
Bulls starting pitcher Evan McKendry fired six shutout frames to extend his consecutive scoreless innings streak to nineteen and one-third innings, with right fielder Ruben Cardenas and second baseman Jonathan Aranda each homering, while Sounds catcher Brian Navarreto clubbed three hits and drove in four runs in Nashville’s 8-4 win over Durham on Thursday evening at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
McKendry (6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 SO) yielded just two hits and two walks while fanning a season-high eight batters, though he would not factor in the final decisions. Dating back to April 28 he has not allowed a run over his last 19.1 innings pitched, adding seven hits and six walks while striking out 18 batters.
Durham plated the game’s first run when Aranda drew a bases-loaded walk in the second, while Cardenas would club a solo shot, his team-leading tenth longball of the year, in the sixth. Nashville, however, would grab the lead with a three-run seventh highlighted by Navarreto’s two-run two-bagger prior to CF Blake Perkins’ go-ahead RBI single. After C Nick Dini’s game-tying run-scoring single in the last of the seventh, the Sounds answered with a five-run eighth to go up 8-3. Aranda would later go deep in the ninth to narrow Durham’s deficit to four.
Nashville kept the pressure on in the fourth game, taking home another victory against the Bulls with a 10-4 final score.
Sounds starting pitcher Robert Gasser **tossed six-plus strong innings and first baseman Jon Singleton *drove in three runs, while Bulls shortstop *Greg Jones **knocked a two-run single in Nashville’s 10-4 win over Durham on Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Sounds got on the board with Singleton’s RBI single before C Alex Jackson and CF Michael Reed each drove in two runs in the first. 3B Abraham Toro and Singleton extended the Bulls lead to 7-0 in the sixth. Jones would give the Bulls’ two runs in the following inning, however Nashville answered when LF Eddy Alvarez and Singleton would drive in a combined three runs. Center fielder Kameron Misner and right fielder Vidal Brujan each drove in a run in the ninth frame.
Game five saw plenty of drama, though — as well as a Bulls win, taking home a 5-3 victory thanks to some game-making home runs!
Bulls first baseman Jonathan Aranda homered for the fourth time in six games, while left fielder Niko Hulsizer drove in four runs, smashing a game-winning two-run home run in the ninth to give Durham a 5-3 win over the Nashville Sounds in front of a paid attendance of 9,026 on Saturday evening at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Entering the last of the ninth tied at three, C Nick Dini drew a leadoff walk to set the scene for Hulsizer. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Hulsizer crushed a 453-foot home run to left to cue the celebration.
Aranda got the scoring started in the opening frame with a solo shot to left. After the Sounds evened the tally in the top of the fourth, Hulsizer would give the Bulls the advantage in the last of the frame with a two-run single into center to make it 3-1. Nashville would then cut their deficit to one with another single score in the fifth before a game-tying solo homer in the eighth set up the dramatic ninth inning.
The sixth and final game was a heartbreaker, sending Durham off on an unfortunate 6-4 loss.
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow struck out six batters over six solid innings as part of a Major League Rehab Assignment with Durham and third baseman Tristan Gray drove in two runs, while Nashville scored three runs in the tenth inning of the Sounds’ 6-4 extra-inning win over the Bulls in front of a paid attendance of 8,824 on Sunday afternoon at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Glasnow (6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO) struck out six over six strong innings, yielding just two hits and two walks. In four outings with Durham as part of his Major League Rehab Assignment he has allowed just one run on seven hits over 13.1 frames, adding 20 punchouts. Sounds reliever Thiago Viera (2.0 IP, H, BB, 3 SO) earned the win and Alex Claudio (1.0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 SO) notched the save, while Bulls righty Ben Heller (2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 SO) suffered the defeat.
