Jackson Van De Brake hit a bases-clearing triple in the top of the 10th inning and then scored on a wild pitch as part of a four-run frame to help the Diamond Heels beat UNC-Wilmington 7-3 Tuesday night.

The Seahawks led early on the strength of two runs in the first inning and another in the fifth. Carolina’s only offense had come from a solo home run off the bat of Luke Stevenson in the fourth. But Stevenson jump-started a game-tying rally in the sixth, clubbing his second home run of the night over the left field fence to cut the UNC-Wilmington lead to 3-2. Gavin Gallaher then went back-to-back with his fellow sophomore to tie the score.

UNC’s bullpen kept the Seahawk bats in check for the remainder of the night, with Ryan Lynch and Walker McDuffie combining for four shutout innings and six strikeouts. Matthew Matthijs entered the game with a runner on first in the bottom of the ninth and shut down the threat to force extra innings.
In the 10th, Stevenson again started a rally by reaching on an error and then advancing to second on a Gallaher single. After a walk to Alex Madera loaded the bases with two outs, Van De Brake stepped to the plate. Down to his last strike, the second baseman sent a ball into the right-center field gap and broke the game open. UNC led for the first time all night.

After Van De Brake scored to extend the lead to 7-3, Matthijs retired the Seahawks in order in the bottom of the 10th to seal the win.
The Diamond Heels are now 15-2 overall and 2-0 in extra-inning games. UNC is also 3-0 away from Boshamer Stadium, and the team will look to improve that mark when it visits Louisville for a three-game series this weekend. The first game on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m.

It’s funny how basketball is just something to do while we wait for baseball.
