So far, 8 of 11 UNC transfers are from the defense.
These are still uncharted waters with the college transfer portal interfacing with NIL payments and how much one has to do with the other. As Carolina announced its wide range of collectives to help athletes, this is more about the football program than profits.
The name that stands out the most is 5-star cornerback Tony Grimes, who battled injuries through three seasons, all of which were under-productive with only one interception. If he is still considered a hot prospect, perhaps his new start comes with NIL money.
Kicker Jonathan Kim, who wanted to put points on the board more than merely kicking off, and quarterback Jacolby Criswell, who was beaten out by Drake Maye, obviously desire more playing time and perhaps money will follow. But it’s unclear why the other seven besides Grimes left a defense that clearly needs help.
So, does this go back to a defense that did not improve much with the change in coordinators from deposed Jay Bateman to celebrated Gene Chizik? Bateman’s last defense that got him fired gave up 5,500 total yards in 13 games or 422 per game. Chizik’s defense so far this season has allowed 5,700 yards or 438 per game.
Against the rush, last year’s team gave up 300 more yards and 23 touchdowns and 500 fewer yards passing but 27 TDs. This season, which still has one more game to go, the Tar Heel defense was better vs. the run by 200 yards that allowed 27 touchdowns and considerably worse against the pass, giving up 500 more yards and 25 touchdowns.
So the players who left had plenty of opportunities to get more snaps on the field but did not stay. And we’ll have to see how many defensive transfers Mack Brown signs after the Holiday Bowl to not only fill those roster spots but shore up what has been, at best, an inconsistent defense that forced Maye and the offense to try to outscore the opponent in most games.
This is the conundrum for Carolina and Brown, who clearly don’t “buy” players up front with NIL money. They need to improve their defense for next season in order for Maye to get the ball back sooner with the score in his favor. And while the incoming transfers may have plenty of potential, some proven stars won’t come for no cash.

Chansky's Notebook: A Different AirThe thirteenth game is a lot different from last year, isn’t it? Chansky's Notebook: Not Coach-SpeakDoes Mack Brown like talking to the media? Sure seems like it. Chansky's Notebook: Just Win, Baby!Mack Brown calls it a trap game, and indeed it could be. Glenn's Notebook: Party Like It's 2016!When the Atlantic Coast Conference places five teams in the men’s basketball Top 25, it’s expected. Heck, in some years, it’s even viewed as a disappointment. So there is still no blaming Mack WHO IS THE CONSTANT for the past 4 years. How does Jay Bateman go from being an EXCELLENT defensive coordinator at Army (who played Power 5 teams) to being a terrible DC? How does Gene Chizik (a former Auburn HEAD COACH who won a National Championship) go from being at least a good coach to bring a terrible DC? Hmmmm…
Could we be placing the blame on them and the NIL when it’s actually the head coach; and UNC players, opposing players, and opposing coaches know that Mack will NEVER make UNC a top 20 team?
Just look at some of the young, energetic coaches, as well as some slightly older (50’s) coaches who teach discipline and see how they are doing. Making complete program turn around as in a year’s time. And Mack has been here 4 years and we’re getting our butts kicked by the likes of Georgia Tech and NCSU with 3rd string quarterbacks. And last year we blew a lead to State when ESPN embarrassed us by saying that the lead we blew was less than a 1 percent chance of happening. And Appalachian State would have beaten us this year if a receiver hadn’t fallen down in open field!
We continue to praise Mack (one of the nicest guys ever) as a great coach, when he’s not even a good coach. A great recruiter, yes, but not a great coach (and the recruiting WILL DROP OFF). But we’ll still have Mack! The sad part about is that a bunch of UNC employees, coaches, staff, etc know what is happening but are afraid to speak up (and I don’t really blame them) as they might lose their jobs or worse yet upset the rich folks in the Rams Club that love Mack!
