UNC junior forward Armando Bacot is having a March for the books. Just days after his team advanced to the Final Four and he was named Most Outstanding Player of the East Region, Bacot was named one of 25 finalists for the Lute Olson Award. The Olson Award is one of several which recognizes the National Player of the Year.
For his regular season accomplishments, Bacot earned a spot on the All-ACC First Team and was the runner-up for ACC Player of the Year. Including UNC’s run in the postseason, Bacot now has 29 double-doubles to his name this season, which is the best in the nation and ties him with Tim Duncan for the most in a single season by an ACC player. Bacot’s 20-point, 22-rebound performance against Saint Peter’s in the Elite Eight was his second 20-20 game this season.
In four NCAA Tournament games, Bacot is averaging 16.5 points per game and 15.8 rebounds per game. His full-season marks of 16.5 points per game and 12.8 rebounds per game far surpass his freshman and sophomore year numbers. Bacot has scored 20 points or more 11 times this season, after doing so just five times in the previous two seasons combined. He was the only player in the ACC this season to average a double-double, and has put up a double-double in six consecutive games.
Bacot is joined by two other ACC players on the list of 25 finalists: Duke’s Paolo Banchero and Wake Forest’s Alondes Williams. Williams beat out Bacot for ACC Player of the Year honors. The winner of the Lute Olson Award will be announced April 1.
Bacot and the Tar Heels will be back in action Saturday night against Duke in the Final Four in New Orleans. Tip-off for that game is tentatively scheduled for 8:49 p.m.
