The UNC men’s basketball season may be over, but Armando Bacot is still earning accolades. The star big man was named a third team All-American by the Associated Press on Tuesday. Bacot earned honorable mention All-America honors from the AP last season.

Bacot is the only member of the first, second or third teams who is not playing in the NCAA Tournament. This season, he ranked among the ACC leaders in scoring (15.9 points per game, 11th), rebounding (10.4 per game, first) and field goal percentage (55.4, fifth). He also ranked 11th in the ACC with 1.0 blocked shots per game.

Earlier this season, Bacot became Carolina’s all-time leader in both double-doubles and rebounds, passing marks set by program legends Billy Cunningham and Tyler Hansbrough, respectively. Bacot received nine votes for ACC Player of the Year, third behind Wong and Appleby. He was second in Player of the Year voting last season.

Unfortunately, the All-America honor is still not enough to Bacot to see his jersey in the Smith Center rafters. The men’s basketball program’s criteria for honored jerseys states a player needs to achieve either first- or second-team All-America honors to qualify.

Bacot could still earn a place in the rafter next season, though. He retains one final year of college eligibility thanks to the NCAA awarding a “COVID year” to all athletes who participated in the 2020-21 season. Bacot has yet to announce whether he’ll return to Chapel Hill.
