Following a week which featured two ranked, shutout wins, two members of the UNC men’s soccer team have won weekly awards from the ACC. Senior midfielder Milo Garvanian and graduate goalkeeper Alec Smir won the conference’s Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively.

Against No. 14 Loyola Marymount and No. 13 Virginia Tech, Garvanian scored three goals and played the maximum 90 minutes in each match. Prior to last week, Garvanian had only scored one goal in three-plus seasons playing for head coach Carlos Somoano at Carolina. Garvanian’s two goals against Loyola Marymount accounted for all of Carolina’s offense in a 2-0 victory, while his goal against the Hokies iced the match and sent Virginia Tech to its first home loss of the season.

Smir notched his eight and ninth shutouts of the season, most in the ACC, in the two wins. He recorded two saves each against LMU and Virginia Tech. As a team, the Tar Heels allowed just 13 total shots between the two matches. Smir has played in all but 18 minutes of Carolina’s 15 matches this season.

Garvanian, Smir and the Tar Heels have one regular season match left before the start of the ACC Tournament. They will both be honored by the program in its Senior Night festivities before their match against No. 11 Notre Dame Friday evening at Dorrance Field.
