UNC set season highs in both made three-pointers and assists in a dominant 91-59 win at Virginia Tech Tuesday night. It’s the Tar Heels’ sixth straight win – extending what was already a season-long streak – and fifth in a row by double digits.

R.J. Davis, Drake Powell and Ian Jackson each made at least three threes, with Jackson knocking down five of his eight attempts to score 19 points. The star freshman was one of five Tar Heels to reach double figures, along with Davis (15 points), Powell (13), Seth Trimble (17) and Ven-Allen Lubin (10). Lubin added 11 rebounds to register his first double-double as a Tar Heel. As a team, UNC shot 33-56 (58.9 percent) from the field and 15-28 (53.6 percent) on threes. The team also totaled 24 assists – 12 of which came from Elliot Cadeau, who fell on short of matching his career high.

UNC’s blowout win came after a slow start, one which saw the team trailing 23-21 with 7:44 remaining in the first half. It would be the last time Carolina would trail all night. Buoyed by several Hokie turnovers, the Tar Heels hit the gas, closing the first half on a 25-6 run to blow the game open by halftime. The larger run included a 15-1 blitz in the final 3:17, which ended on a Trimble dunk as time expired.

The lead only grew in the second half, eclipsing 20 points within two minutes and soon ballooning past 30. UNC’s largest advantage was 36 points at 79-43 – its largest lead in an ACC game all season. The 32-point final margin of victory is the team’s largest in a true road game in head coach Hubert Davis’ four seasons in charge.

Tuesday’s game was also the fourth time in UNC’s six-game winning streak the Tar Heels have eclipsed 90 points. In all four instances, the team has shot at least 55 percent from the field. It’s the first time in ACC play Carolina has shot at least 50 percent in three consecutive games.

The win improves UNC to 20-11 overall and 13-6 in ACC play. The Tar Heels will wrap up the regular season when they host No. 2 Duke at the Smith Center Saturday night at 6:30 p.m.
