Welcome to the Small Surprise Spotlight, presented by Alamance County Visitors Bureau. We’re uncovering hidden gems in Alamance County that might be closer than you think!

In this month’s feature, Visit Alamance invites you to uncover food, fun, and flavor in Alamance County this holiday season. Grace VandeVisser, Executive Director of the Alamance County Visitor’s Bureau, checked in with us recently to tell us about some sips and treats, and other small surprises, you will discover in Alamance County.

1. Tell us how Visit Alamance started the Sip and Savor events.

This is our first year offering the Sip and Savor campaign. Our partners have so much to offer year-round, and during the holidays our food and beverage partners offer so many creative ways to include the tastes of the season, and we want others to have the opportunity to join us on the journey and explore Alamance County.

2. Why is Alamance County a great place to celebrate the holidays?

Our downtowns are wonderful areas to celebrate the season.  Each are beautifully decorated, from streetscapes to shops.  It really gets you in the holiday spirit, not to mention the hospitality provided by our business owners and locals alike.  We start celebrating early with parades mid-November and we even have a true hometown evening parade in downtown Mebane scheduled the first Friday in December led by the A&T Marching Band.

3. What are some of the most unique things that Alamance County has to offer around the holiday season?

For years, Alamance Arts has hosted Christmas at Alamance Arts.  This is a month-long event where Alamance Arts is transformed where you can shop for unique gifts made by artists across the state, holiday decorations to add to your home and also enjoy numerous holiday inspired programs.  From classes to live music.  In addition, a stop to enjoy Christmas by Candlelight in historic Glencoe and the Holiday Market in Saxapahaw, would make for a nice addition to your holiday plans.

4. If someone were to take a day trip to visit for the holidays, what are some recommendations for how to spend their time?

Start off in any of our downtowns, pick up one of the warm holiday drinks available throughout town and step into one of our shops.  Consider taking in a production of The Nutcracker at Elon University or the Ella Bella Nutcracker at the Paramount Theater in Burlington.  Finish off your evening with a stop at Tanner’s Wine Bar for an aperitif.

5. What is your favorite thing about celebrating the holidays in Alamance County?

The community. Engaging with our visitors and our locals. The holiday season is an opportunity to remind us, as we like to say, of our small-town charm and the small surprises you will find along your journey.

6. How do you hope to see the Visit Alamance Sip and Savor events grow?

We hope this campaign inspires you to find a new favorite place to enjoy with family and friends. With this said, we would love to continue building upon the creative ways to enjoy the holidays.
