“The Changemakers” is a monthly interview on 97.9 The Hill and Chapelboro.com presented by LAUNCH Chapel Hill, a startup accelerator and local community of entrepreneurs and innovators! Listen below for this month’s spotlight on LOOM3D!

This month on “The Changemakers” join for a discussion about fabric, fashion and the possible future found in maximizing utility and minimizing waste. Jeanine Fry and LOOM3D are seeking to create a new, better way of clothing the world.

“We have developed a process to weave apparel seamlessly,” said Fry. “So, currently, most — if not all — of your apparel is made from a two-dimensional fabric that is laid out. Fabric pieces are cut from that fabric, and then they are sewn together before finally assembling the finished product. Whereas, we take yarn and weave it directly into the three-dimensional garment. We are eliminating a lot of laborious steps in between that, and we are eliminating off-cut waste and enabling the opportunity for just-in-time or made to order production, enabling customization and eliminating a lot of waste that is produced.”

Fry is the founder and CEO of LOOM3D, and part of a team of co-inventors who worked across disciplines and specialties to break new ground and develop the technology that makes LOOM3D possible. According to Fry, it’s estimated roughly 30 percent of clothing manufactured never even gets sold, and a solution like LOOM3D has potential to save millions of dollars per year in lost and wasted material.
