Welcome to the July edition of Glowing Review, presented by RosieGlow Skin Studio. I’m Ali Evans, and every month, I share my experience with a fun and unique self-care or wellness trend. Jenny, the owner of RosieGlow Skin Studio, has made this column possible, giving me an opportunity to not only share the incredible services she offers, but to shine light on some of the likeminded care providers in this area. I think that’s pretty neat.
We’ve been friends for at least three months now (we are friends, right?) so I feel comfortable sharing one of my deepest, darkest secrets with you. I am not good at relaxing. I’m good at other things. I can parallel park, I played the flute in middle school, and I have an eye for throw pillows, but I am simply not skilled in the art of relaxation. What a weird thing to share while asking you to continue reading this column.
I’ve been to Areté Float Tank Studio a handful of times. Not only is their owner Jen a total delight, but there is also a lazy shop dog named Newton who is living out my dream of sleeping on a couch all day while people tell him how adorable he is. Floatation therapy is exactly what you picture, especially if you’ve seen “Stranger Things.” You lay in a large state of the art pod filled with 1000 pounds of salt to help you float. Floating is designed to help with stress relief, pain relief, injury recovery, and more.
The water in the tank is close to your body’s temperature, helping your body “become one with the water.” You’ll be instructed to use not-quite-warm water during your shower beforehand to help you adjust. With the way your body immediately becomes weightless, I’ve found that my mind follows shortly thereafter. This is a super unique way to temporarily free yourself from stress and give your mind some freedom.
I know that everyone’s expectations with self-care investments are different, so I use the “Self-Care Scale” in each edition of Glowing Review, so you can choose what to try based on what matters the most to you.
Experience: Floatation Therapy at Areté Float Tank Studio
Relaxation Level: 7. Now that you know my big secret, this is still pretty high on the relaxation meter. Especially for your first float you’ll find it harder to “get there,” because you’re trying something brand new that sort of looks like you went to space to do it.
Painful Meter: 0. Unless you find a lukewarm shower to be painful, you’re in the clear. Leaving Newton is tough though – I should have factored that in.
External Results: 4. This is an internal result driven experience. I’m still giving it a 4 despite no noticeable difference to my appearance, because I’m a firm believer you glow differently when you feel good on the inside.
All of this brings me back to my inability to relax. At Areté, I’ve decided that isn’t my goal. I see it as a time for reflection and I give my thoughts permission to roam. I request for music to play the whole time, and I never close the lid of the tank. My point here is that this experience is meant to be yours. Book a float, write down all the questions you want to ask, and ask your mind and body tell you what they need from your float. I think you’ll find that they answer.
I’ll see you next month with another experience to share thanks to RosieGlow Skin Studio!
