Is Your Pet Trying to Tell You Something?

Your dog stares at you with those knowing eyes. Your cat refuses to eat their usual food. Your horse nickers softly when you approach their stall. We all recognize these obvious forms of animal communication—but what if I told you that your animals are also speaking to you in a language you might not realize you already understand?

As an animal communicator, people come to me when they want to know their pets on a deeper level. What often happens is my clients discover they’ve been receiving messages from their pets all along. Not a week goes by where I do a reading and a client responds to a piece of information with, “Oh, somehow I already knew that!”

And here’s the beautiful truth: you don’t need to be a professional intuitive or have any special psychic training to tap into this natural ability. In fact, just like many of my clients, you might already be doing it.

The Language of the Heart

Yes, our pets use physical cues—barking, scratching, pawing—to get our attention. But they’re also masters at communicating through what I call the language of the heart. This is the subtle, intuitive connection that exists between you and your animal companion.

Have you ever suddenly thought about changing your dog’s food, only to discover later that they had developed a sensitivity to their current brand? Or felt an inexplicable urge to buy a specific toy for your cat, who then became obsessed with it? These aren’t coincidences. They’re examples of animal communication in action.

Recognizing the Messages

Your animal’s messages can arrive in surprisingly varied ways. Sometimes they come as sudden thoughts that pop into your mind about their health or needs. Other times, they manifest as feelings, gut instincts, or even unusual sensory experiences—a smell or taste that seems out of place. It’s easy to dismiss these as random thoughts or your imagination at work.

The key to recognizing genuine animal communication? These messages typically arrive suddenly and unexpectedly, especially when you weren’t actively thinking about the topic. If you’re going about your day and suddenly get a flash of insight about your pet, that’s worth paying attention to.

They’re Looking Out for You, Too

Here’s something that often surprises people: animals don’t just send messages about their own needs. They also communicate to help their humans navigate life’s challenges. Our animals are deeply invested in our wellbeing, just like we are in theirs.

I’ve seen animals plant ideas in their humans’ minds that led to positive life changes. Multiple dogs and cats have let me know that they were the ones who wanted to speak with an animal communicator, and so they kept sending that message to their humans until the humans took action and found me. I even had one dog, who was close to the end of her life, tell me to reschedule the session I had booked with her and her humans. She wanted to wait until she passed and then speak with them from her new perspective on the other side. When we finally talked the next week, what resulted was a conversation where she was able to reassure her human mom and dad that she was happy and thriving in the afterlife.

A Tool with Real-World Applications

Animal communication isn’t just about fostering deeper connections—though that alone is invaluable. It can also help identify physical and emotional symptoms, and while animal communication should never be used alone to diagnose, it can give us information that help veterinarians diagnose. Many veterinarians, groomers, dog trainers, and other animal professionals quietly incorporate animal communication into their work. I’ve had people confide in me that they’re “undercover” animal communicators, using their intuitive abilities alongside their technical expertise to better serve the animals in their care.

Your Natural Gift

If you’ve felt drawn to animal communication while reading this, there’s a good chance you have a natural gift for it. The ability to communicate with animals exists in all of us. It’s simply a matter of learning to trust and develop it.

If you’d like to explore more, please join me and Reiki Master Teacher and Quantum Energy Medicine Practitioner Mary Justus on February 28th and March 1st, 2026, for a weekend workshop. We’ll be gathering in a small group in Chapel Hill to learn how to receive messages from animals and then send healing energy to them. It’s suitable for any adult, even if you have no experience in energy healing or intuitive work. To find out more or to register, visit https://www.earthandskies.com/workshop

If you’d like to experience professional animal communication, I offer sessions for both living and deceased animals. Check out www.EarthandSkies.com to learn more and book your session.
