Ahead of high winds and severe storms expected in central North Carolina on Tuesday, Orange and Chatham County school districts are planning for early releases.
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, Orange County Schools and Chatham County Schools districts each sent out messages to parents on Monday night, saying their operations will only run for part of Tuesday ahead of the storm system.
CHCCS said its schools will dismiss students three hours early on Tuesday — meaning elementary schools will dismiss at 11:35 a.m., middle schools will dismiss at 12:20 p.m., and high schools will dismiss at 1 p.m. Additionally, all after-school activities — including athletics, events, and Community Schools after-school care — are either cancelled or postponed. Any scheduled field trips will not take place on Tuesday either.
The district’s leadership said an early dismissal is to help get “all students home safely before the threats intensify,” and that individual schools’ staff will receive guidance from their principal and supervisors regarding Tuesday’s instruction.
Orange County Schools will also release its students three hours early on Tuesday. Elementary schools will dismiss at 11:30 a.m., middle schools will dismiss at 12:25 p.m. and high schools will dismiss at 1 p.m.
Chatham County Schools will dismiss all students at 12 p.m., with all after-school activities also being cancelled.
The National Weather Service includes Orange and Chatham counties in its wind advisory set in place for much of Tuesday, as sustained, strong gusts of wind are expected and the Triangle is forecast to see more than an inch of rain fall. Severe thunderstorms, flash flooding, and the right conditions for tornadoes are all expected to develop in this storm system, which is forecast to move from the southern United States northeast.
