UNC Campus Health recently announced it has eliminated its weekend access fee for student visitors.

Prior to the change, which was shared on February 14, weekend visits to Campus Health had a $50 fee attached. Now, students can access the service on Saturdays without the initial charge.

Campus Health Executive Director Ken Pittman said in a statement the change aims to remove barriers to health care.

“In response to student feedback and requests, and in an effort to remove any barriers to receiving health care, particularly for those who find cost a factor in accessing care,” said Pittman, “we have eliminated the $50 weekend charge for the majority of services at Campus Health. Insurance will continue to be billed for services such as X-rays, labs and procedures.”

UNC Healthy Heels, a collaboration between Campus Health, Student Wellness, Counseling and Psychological Services and Campus Recreation, called the change a step toward more equitable healthcare.

“The weekend access charge was an economic barrier to students who might only have free time to access health services on the weekend; eliminating it is a step towards a more equitable campus health community,” Healthy Heels said on social media.
