UNC – Chapel Hill Chancellor Carol Folt is receiving a 6.1 percent salary increase, bringing her annual base salary to $632,810.

The increase was approved as part of a vote by the Board of Governors on Friday where 13 of the UNC System’s 17 campus leaders received pay bumps retroactive to July 1, 2017.

Folt is now on par with North Carolina State University Chancellor Randy Woodson in annual base salary. Woodson’s previous salary was nearly $21,000 more than Folt.

The board took two votes on Friday regarding salaries. The first raised the salary ranges the board uses for the system president and chancellors at constituent institutions. The second implemented the individual chancellor raises.

Three of the four chancellors who did not receive a raise are the three newest hires, who were all brought on after two separate salary adjustments recently implemented by the board. The fourth is UNC – Asheville Chancellor Mary Grant who is leaving the system at the end of this academic semester.

After the last round of raises in July 2016, board chair Lou Bissette said that the next raises would be “performance-oriented increases.” UNC System President Margaret Spellings said after Friday’s meeting these new figures reflect that.

Spellings said she met face-to-face with chancellors over the summer and evaluated factors including institutional goals and priorities, metrics in the system-wide strategic plan and “personal areas for development.”
