The UNC System President named the 13 people who will be responsible for identifying top candidates for the UNC-Chapel Hill open chancellorship on Monday.
President Peter Hans and the university system announced his picks through a release, sharing the formation of the group tasked with searching for the flagship campus’ next permanent chancellor after the departure of Kevin Guskiewicz in December.
The group is highlighted by five UNC campus leaders, as well as three UNC trustees, two members of the system’s Board of Governors and Hans himself. Dr. Cristy Page, the chief academic officer of UNC Health and executive dean of the UNC School of Medicine, will chair the search advisory committee, said the system president.
“A dean, faculty member and three-time Tar Heel graduate, Dr. Page brings a unique perspective to her leadership of this distinguished group,” Hans said in Monday’s release. “I’m confident our nation’s first public university will draw a field of excellent candidates. As a proud alumnus, I am eager to get to work with a committee that represents Carolina’s vibrant and diverse campus community.”
“I am honored to lead this talented group of individuals who all have a deep love and respect for Carolina,” Page said. “Every day, I see the life-changing impact of this great university, from the education in our classrooms to the health care we provide to North Carolinians. This is an important role for the state, and we’re excited to find a leader who values our service to North Carolina.”
Along with Page, the lone other faculty member on the committee is Beth Moracco, who is a professor in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and is the chair of the faculty. Chair of the Employe Forum on the Chapel Hill campus Katie Musgrove, President of the school’s General Alumni Association Veronica Mora Flaspoehler, and UNC Student Body President Christopher Everett are also among search committee members. Chair John Preyer, Jennifer Evans, and Malcolm Turner are the trio of representatives from the UNC Board of Trustees.
The full list, with members in alphabetical order after the chair, is:
- Cristy Page (’96, ’02): professor and executive dean, UNC School of Medicine and chief academic officer of UNC Health (chair of the search advisory committee)
- Kellie Hunt Blue: member of the UNC Board of Governors, county manager for Robeson County, UNC School of Government Foundation Board of Directors
- Jennifer Evans (‘94): member of the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees, senior executive in medical technology companies and co-chair of UNC’s $5 billion Campaign for Carolina
- Christopher Everett: student body president and public policy major from Clayton
- Veronica Mora Flaspoehler (’08): president of the General Alumni Association of UNC-Chapel Hill
- Frank Gilliam: chancellor of UNC Greensboro and former dean of the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs
- Peter Hans (‘91): president of the University of North Carolina System
- Beth Moracco (’92, ’99): chair of the faculty and professor in UNC-CH’s Gillings School of Global Public Health
- Katie Musgrove (’15): chair of the Employee Forum, business officer for clinical programs at the UNC School of Law
- Jim Phillips Jr. (’79): partner at Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard
- John Preyer (’90): chair of the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees and co-founder and president of Restoration Systems, an environmental company
- Randy Ramsey: chair of the UNC Board of Governors and founder of Jarrett Bay Boatworks
- Malcolm Turner (‘93): vice chair of the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees, head of strategy and corporate development at DraftKings, former vice chancellor and athletics director at Vanderbilt University
While not a formal member of the committee, Hans said Anita Brown-Graham — the associate dean of the UNC School of Government and the lead coordinator for Carolina Across 100 — will serve as a special advisor to the committee. The president said she will give “strategic guidance” to both him and Page through the search process and will “serve as the committee’s primary liaison to campus stakeholders.”
The committee will vet different candidates and create an unranked slate of at least three candidates to Hans — whose responsibility it is to make a top choice and present it to the Board of Governors for a vote of approval. To help inform their decisions, Monday’s release said the search committee members will “offer a number of opportunities for public input” from UNC-Chapel Hill stakeholders. The UNC System said to expect an online survey, on-campus listening forums and focus group interviews in the coming months, with representatives of the faculty, staff, students and alumni having a chance to “engage directly with candidate finalists.”
UNC is seeking its 13th permanent chancellor in school history after Guskiewicz left the role to become the president at Michigan State University. After his hiring and before his formal departure from Chapel Hill, Hans named former UNC System Board of Governors Member Lee Roberts as the university’s interim chancellor. During his first media availability in January, Roberts said it was too early to tell whether he would enter his name for consideration of the permanent role.
