UPDATE: The Chapel Hill Police Department said on Thursday, Mar. 26, the suspect in the investigation into gunfire along North Roberson Street was arrested and charged.

An alert from the town said — with help from the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Marshals and FBI Safe Streets program — law enforcement arrested 19-year-old Mebane resident Amir James on Wednesday. He is charged with assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm in an enclosed space to incite fear, discharging a firearm within city limits, and going armed to the terror of people. James is currently being held under a $250,000 bond at the Orange County Detention Center.

The Chapel Hill Police Department is investigating a report of gunfire near a key stretch of downtown streets Monday evening.

An alert from the town government said police officers responded at 4:44 p.m. to North Roberson Street between West Franklin Street and West Rosemary Street following the report. An initial investigation determined one person shot at another person before leaving the area, according to Chapel Hill Police. No one has reported an injury from the incident as of 6 p.m.

Investigators believe the gunfire was an isolated incident and the public’s greater safety is not threatened. Monday’s alert said the Chapel Hill Police Department “is working to identify and locate a suspect.”
