In response to Sunday’s massacre in Orlando, Uber announced that the company would be offering free rides to and from specific locations that are important to the history and culture of the LGBT community.  The free rides are available from noon on Friday, June 17 until midnight on Monday, June 20.

This includes six locations in the Triangle.  Free rides will be offered to both the LGBT Center of Durham and the LGBT Center of Raleigh.  Other locations are popular nightlife spots in the LGBT community.  They include the bar and The Pinhook in Durham and Legends Nightclub and Flex in Raleigh.

Eight Charlotte-area locations are also available to people in North Carolina.  This promotion is available in markets across the United States.

Pulse, an LGBT nightclub in Orlando, was the scene of the biggest mass shooting in United States history.  Forty-nine people were killed and 53 were injured.

In a statement Uber said, “Like people across the world, we were deeply shocked and saddened by the recent murders at a gay nightclub in Orlando. The world is a brighter and better place when we are all free to be ourselves. And we want to bring people together, no matter who you are or where you’re from.”

The offer gives riders two rides per person, up to $20 per ride.
