Chatham County is installing two new electric vehicle charging stations in Siler City and Pittsboro, the county government announced Monday afternoon. The installation of the stations comes with the aid of two 2021 grants from the State of North Carolina and the Volkswagen Settlement Fund.

One of the stations — which will use a faster, direct current charger — will be located at the Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q restaurant in Siler City. The station in Pittsboro, located at the Chatham County Agriculture and Conference Center, will be a slower Level 2 charger.

“The direct current (DC) fast charger at Smithfield’s is designed to quickly charge a vehicle and will be mostly used for driver’s charging with a destination farther away,” said Kevin Lindley, Chatham County Environmental Quality Director. “The Level 2 station at the Agriculture and Conference Center will more often be used as a destination charger since it charges more slowly. This will be ideal for people who want to drive their EV to an event at the Center but might not have enough range to make it all the way there and back without charging.”

Owners of an electric vehicle will need to create an account with the ChargePoint network to use the new stations. There is a charge to use them, set by the county to recover the cost of electricity.
