Crews working on the Churton Street improvement project in Hillsborough pierced a natural gas line Tuesday morning.

The damage to the line occurred while crews were installing a new guardrail along the east side of Churton Street between Eno River bridge and the intersection with Nash and Kollock streets, according to the town. The existing guardrail was no longer compliant with current regulations.

Officials said in a release the puncture caused traffic to be diverted for approximately an hour. Work continued into the night after repairs took longer than initially expected.

Part of the reason for the delays lasting longer than anticipated was that the new guardrail had to be completely installed before the thoroughfare could be completely reopened.

Work on Churton Street has been ongoing for several weeks making access improvements to the roadway.
