RALEIGH – The commissioner of the Division of Law Enforcement has been appointed by Gov. Pat McCrory as interim secretary of the Department of Public Safety.

A statement released Friday said Frank L. Perry will take over for Kieran Shanahan, who announced last week he would leave the position as secretary after just six months.

A biography on the DPS website says Perry served 22 years with the FBI as a special agent. In addition, he’s served as director of investigations for the state Office of the State Auditor and has worked with the N.C. State Ethics Commission.

McCrory also announced that Jeff Epstein will serve as interim secretary at the Department of Revenue while Secretary Lyons Gray takes a medical leave. Epstein is the department’s chief operating officer.
