A Chapel Hill man was killed by a falling tree while standing on his deck during a thunderstorm Wednesday afternoon, according to Chapel Hill Police.

Fifty-five-year-old William Randolph Morris was pronounced dead when EMS officials arrived at the resident on Roper Lane in Durham County near the Orange County line.

The storm came through Chapel Hill during the 6:00 hour, bringing extremely high winds along with heavy rain. The incident took place around 6:45 p.m. Last week’s ice storm had already weakened trees and branches in the area.
