Americans are reeling today after yet another mass shooting, this one at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, that left at least 21 dead including 19 children.
In Orange County, local leaders took to social media with their thoughts, prayers, and substantive comments as well.
Here are some of the comments shared on Twitter by elected officials and school administrators, including U.S. House Rep. David Price; State Senator Valerie Foushee; incoming State House Rep. Allen Buansi; UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz (who also weighed in recently, at greater length, on last week’s shooting in Buffalo); Chapel Hill Town Council member Michael Parker; Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools superintendent Nyah Hamlett – and CHCCS board member Rani Dasi, who shared the words of another prominent public figure.
In recent days we have witnessed two consecutive acts of weaponized hate – first in Buffalo & now Uvalde, TX where at least 18 children & a teacher were murdered today in their school. Congressional inaction is reprehensible and amoral. We must pass common sense gun reforms NOW.

Horrifying. When will our nation wake up? I’ll be praying for the victims, families & first responders. We must address the gun violence epidemic in our country. No family should ever have to go through such an unspeakable tragedy. If we can’t protect our children we have failed. https://t.co/N7xvQHY2gC

Whether it’s senseless gun violence like we heard about today in TX or measures that would forbid supporting LGBTQ+ students, our kids are under attack. In schools, students are supposed to learn and feel safe & supported. That’s not happening & we must act quickly for their sake

The shooting at Robb Elementary School is horrifying and heartbreaking. Violence and fear should never be in our schools and in our childrens' lives. Our hearts are with their families tonight.

Sen. Romney, we know what the answers. Legislators like you just need the common sense and integrity to implement them. It's not that complicated. #GunControlNow https://t.co/FzcsW4soXq

When “my thoughts and prayers are with them” becomes cliché there’s a much bigger problem and response necessary! As a mother, educator, and superintendent my heart aches … no one should have to send their child(ren) to school or go to work wondering if tragedy will reach them.
