A person struck by a vehicle along East Franklin Street on Tuesday night suffered life-threatening injuries, according to the Chapel Hill Police Department.
A release on Wednesday from police said officers responded at 9:16 p.m. to a report of a pedestrian collision along East Franklin Street at the Eastgate Crossing shopping center. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene while the pedestrian — who Chapel Hill Police did not identify — was transported to UNC Hospitals for treatment.
A spokesperson for the Chapel Hill Police Department told Chapelboro charges are not expected to be brought against the driver over the collision. The investigation into the incident, however, is still ongoing.
The police department’s release said as of Wednesday morning, no additional information is available to the public at this time.
The crash marks 14 pedestrian-involved crashes so far in 2024, according to Town of Chapel Hill data. Half of those are categorized as resulting in “evident” to “disabling” injuries, while six others were listed as the pedestrians having “possible” injuries.

Thank you for posting all you know about this accident and the (fatal) one on 20 Nov 2023 which involved someone close to me. I don’t understand the CH Police Department’s treatment of these tragedies. We (or our loved ones and friends) all live and walk in Chapel Hill and should know the dangers around us. CH Police don’t seem to investigate the accidents and don’t release the information they have. Wake County, for example, provides much information about these cases. Usually the drivers are charged and then charges are dropped after investigation, but the initial news reports tell us what happened and who was involved.
