UPDATE: On Monday night, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools and Chatham County Schools each announced they will operate under two-hour delays Tuesday morning. Orange County Schools announced it will be closed again on Tuesday.

With flash flooding and other bad weather across central North Carolina, Orange County Schools and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools announced they will not be holding classes on Monday.

A release from the Orange County Schools district to families and staff on Sunday night cited “a high potential for a variety of inclement weather situations” as driving the decision to close school buildings.

“There will be no in-person instruction or remote learning tomorrow for students,” Orange County Schools said. “All school buildings will be closed and all on-site activities are canceled for tomorrow including after-school care, driver’s education and athletics.”

As of Sunday night, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools said its offices and schools will be open as usual on Monday; however, the district cancelled classes once the heavy rain and high winds arrived early on Monday morning.

The National Weather Service warned that a “multi-hazard storm system” would be developing over central North Carolina overnight on Sunday. Monday morning’s weather includes heavy rain, gusty winds and flash flooding, with the weather service issuing an alert through 9:15 a.m.

The combination of heavy rain and high winds led to several thousand Orange County residents being without power late Sunday night and early on Monday, according to Duke Energy.

With a colder front forecasted to roll through on Monday morning, there is also a chance snow could develop mid-day.

Additional information on the school districts’ plans can be found by going to Orange County Schools’ website and the CHCCS website.
