Morris Grove Elementary School in Chapel Hill is dismissing students at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday after a fallen tree knocked out power to the building.
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools first notified the community about the power, internet and phone outage at 9:14 a.m. Wednesday morning, identifying the cause as a fallen tree in the area of Eubanks Road. Though the school district initially estimated power could be restored as early as 10:15 a.m., the outage continued through the 11:00 hour.
At 11:06 a.m., CHCCS sent another notice saying it was working on an early dismissal plan, and that a new estimate said power would not be restored to the school until 6:00 p.m.
As part of the early dismissal plan, buses will depart Morris Grove at 12:30 p.m. for all normal bus riders, and families who normally pick up their students at school will be allowed to do so starting at the same time. CHCCS warned motorists that Eubanks Road is still closed in both directions near the recycling center due to the fallen tree, and that families approaching the school building from Martin Luther King Boulevard will need to use an alternate route.
Afterschool activities and afterschool care have been cancelled. Staff will remain at the school until all students have been picked up or dropped off by their bus.
