Ida Howell Friday, whose late husband Bill served as UNC System President for 30 years, passed away peacefully at home on Monday.

The William and Ida Friday Institute for Continuing Education, named for the influential couple, confirmed the news in an announcement on Thursday.

Friday was described as a “lifelong learner, activist and advocate for others” with a specific focus on women’s issues, social justice, historic preservation and public health.

She was influential in restructuring the Chapel Hill non-profit Compass Center for Women and Families.

Friday graduated from UNC – Chapel Hill with a Master’s in public health.

Ida and Bill were married for 70 years before his passing in 2012.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are asked to be directed to the William and Ida Friday Fund for Lifelong Learning.

Friday was 97 years old.
