The Veterans Memorial Committee of Orange County says that they hope to unveil the first facet of their new veteran’s memorial on Memorial Day of this year.
Director of Asset Management Services for Orange County Jeffrey Thompson says that they have reached about 15 percent of their total goal, which is $500,000.
“The memorial has already been started, the flag pole is already in place and a lot of the groundwork has already been done, but that first phase is really going to make the space special,” said Thompson.
The first phase is called the ceremonial space and flag pole and includes the flag pole and the area surrounding it.
Thompson says that the memorial is meant to be a place of remembrance and solace.
“It’s not a war memorial, it’s more of a service memorial,” said Thompson. “It’s there to honor veterans past, present and future and their families. It’s a very peaceful place, and very fitting.”
The committee hopes to have the project finished in the next three to four years.
