The new sign is up and the date is set. Extraordinary Thrift Store in Carrboro, formerly CommunityWorx Thrift Store, announced it will open to the public on Friday, Feb. 27.
Extraordinary Ventures — a Chapel Hill-based nonprofit that provides jobs and workforce training to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities — is adding the shop located at 125 W. Main Street in Carrboro to its variety of businesses. The move came after CommunityWorx announced in late December it would disband and hand off the thrift shop after more than 70 years.
“We are incredibly excited that our community will have the opportunity to experience the benefits of inclusive employment firsthand,” said Lisa Kaylie, Executive Director of Extraordinary Ventures in a release. “The Extraordinary Thrift Store is more than a place to shop—it’s a place where people can see what’s possible when everyone is given the chance to contribute, belong, and thrive.”
The release also listed local organizations which the shop will partner with. Those include the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service (IFC), Chapel Hill–Carrboro City Schools, and the Refugee Community Partnership. It also said Extraordinary Ventures is looking at ways to collaborate with CHCCS PTAs.
“The store continues the legacy of a longtime community thrift space while bringing renewed energy, improved accessibility, and expanded inclusive employment opportunities to downtown Carrboro,” the release from Extraordinary Ventures read.
Alongside setting its opening date, Extraordinary Thrift Shop also launched its new website. It features a guide to donating items, options for gift card purchases, and more.
The organization is planning to celebrate its new venture with an open house and public ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for Feb. 27 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Both the public and members of the media are invited to attend, where they can meet members of Extraordinary’s staff and see the space. The ribbon cutting itself will take place at 4:00 p.m.
The thrift store will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and will open at noon on Sundays. The store will not be open Mondays. Donations and drop offs end at 5 p.m.
