Durham County Detention Services received accreditation on Tuesday from the American Correctional Association for the first time ever.
This makes Durham County’s Detention Center just the third county detention center in North Carolina to be ACA certified, joining facilities in Mecklenburg and New Hanover counties.
“Our office spent almost the last two years preparing for an onsite audit from the ACA,” Durham County Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead said. “We are honored to know that during the November 2020 audit, the Durham County Detention Center received one of the highest scores ever earned by an agency seeking accreditation for the first time.”
Earning ACA accreditation involves a complex system of verification that correctional agencies/facilities are complying with national standards. A series of reviews, evaluations, audits, and hearings is factored into accreditation decisions.
ACA standards are seen as the national benchmark for the effective operation of correctional systems throughout the United States and are necessary to ensure that correctional facilities are operated professionally.
