Thursday afternoon, the infamous Can Opener Bridge in Durham caused another accident.
This crash happened while an NBC News crew was there covering the story of the crash-causing low bridge.
The NBC News story isn’t the only national coverage the Can Opener Bridge has received this week. The Wall Street Journal posted a story on the bridge Wednesday.
Thursday’s crash made life tough for the driver of a “Forward Air Solutions” truck driver. But, the driver is not alone.
Since 2008, at least 100 accidents have occurred because of the low bridge. It has become an internet phenomenon thanks to the website 11foot8.
The website gets its name from the clearance height of the Can Opener Bridge. There are signs and warning lights that alert drivers, but those are not always enough, evidently. This is especially true for out-of-town drivers who are following directions via GPS.
Jurgen Henn operates 11foot8. He began tracking accidents at the bridge in 2008 when he set up a camera at his office. The bridge is located on Gregson Street in Durham near the intersection of Peabody Street close to Brightleaf Square. Henn’s videos have received millions of views on YouTube. This is his video from the most recent crash.
