Spring is in the air, which means there’s a lot happening around our community!
Saturday morning, about 7000 runners will hit the streets of Chapel Hill for the Tar Heel 10 Miler. The Piedmont Farm Tour runs Saturday and Sunday from 2-6 pm, your chance to tour more than three dozen local farms. For the politically minded, there’s a slight chance there’ll be a little bit of a demonstration in Raleigh on Monday as the General Assembly returns to session.
And that’s not all:
All weekend long, the State Fairgrounds is hosting the Southern Women’s Show, with food, music, fashion, dancing, shopping, prizes, and more – plus some celebrity guests, like Stephen “Twitch” Boss of So You Think You Can Dance and Whitney Way Thore of the TLC show “My Big Fat Fabulous Life.”
Whitney Way Thore spoke with Aaron Keck this week on WCHL.
Sunday afternoon from 3-6, the local nonprofit Learning Outside is hosting “Meadow Lark,” an afternoon of music, games, activities, food and fun at the Irvin Nature Preserve off Jones Ferry Road. (The band Big Fat Gap will perform; food will be available from a wide variety of local establishments.) Proceeds will go to support scholarships for kids’ summer nature programs through Learning Outside.
Susan Reda of Learning Outside spoke with Aaron Keck on Friday.
To help mark International Autism Awareness Month, this Tuesday, April 26, is “Dine 4 Autism” day across the Triangle – with dozens of area restaurants donating a portion of their proceeds that day to the Autism Society of North Carolina. Participating restaurants in Orange County: Provence, Tyler’s Tap Room, and Rise Biscuits and Donuts in Carrboro; the Bagel Bar, Buns, The Egg & I, and the Root Cellar in Chapel Hill; and the Hillsborough BBQ Company in Hillsborough. (Get the full list of participating restaurants here.)
Lisa Kaylie and Tami Watson of the Autism Society’s Orange-Chatham chapter spoke with Aaron on Friday, along with Tami’s son Rico, a senior at Cedar Ridge High School.
On Thursday evening, April 28, Silverspot Cinema in University Place is hosting a fundraiser to benefit WCOM-FM, Carrboro’s community radio station. (Click here to buy tickets.) The event begins at 6 pm with heavy hors d’oeuvres and a chance to meet some of WCOM’s show hosts; your ticket also includes admission to a movie of your choice at Silverspot (which you can use on a different night).
Art Menius hosts “The Revolution Starts Now” on WCOM. He stopped by WCHL on Friday afternoon to promote the fundraiser.
And keep your calendars marked for a major event next weekend: the biennial Chapel Hill Garden Tour, featuring tours of seven private gardens in Chapel Hill plus the North Carolina Botanical Garden, April 30 and May 1. Proceeds from the tour benefit the Chapel Hill Garden Club and the NC Botanical Garden – especially their new, interactive Children’s Wonder Garden.
Tylene Elliott is the tour chair for this year’s Chapel Hill Garden Tour. She stopped by WCHL this week for a chat with Aaron Keck.
