A popular service by the Orange County Animal Services is back again for 2022: low-cost rabies vaccinations for pets.
The department is set to host its first clinic of the year on Saturday, February 26, at the Eubanks Road park and ride lot in Chapel Hill. The drive-thru style clinic, which is set to last from 9 a.m. through 12 p.m., will offer low-cost options to ensure residents’ cats and dogs are up-to-date on their vaccinations.
Orange County Animal Services will offer one-year and three-year vaccinations for $10. Microchips will also be offered for $35 each, with owners able to choose whether their pet will receive only a rabies vaccine, only a microchip or both. The county department says cash payments are preferred in order to help the line of cars move quickly.
Pet owners will need to have their animal’s previous rabies certificate on hand for their pet to receive the three-year rabies vaccine, not just a rabies tag. Additionally, Orange County Animal Services requests that owners bringing cats to the drive-thru clinic ensure their animals are in a secure carrier.
Maintaining a pet’s rabies vaccination is crucial for their health and their owner’s. The disease is transmitted through secondary saliva exposure, and unvaccinated dogs and cats must either be euthanized or quarantined for months if they contract rabies. Only one rabies case has been reported in Orange County in 2022: a bat in Cedar Grove on January 3. But the county’s animal services also received two reports of positive rabies cases in December, both of which were skunks.
