An annual program from the Orange County Animal Services is back again this year to help fund local initiatives supporting animals.

The department announced it has reopened applications for The Pat Sanford Animal Welfare Grant. It’s the award’s fifth year and it supports both seed projects or big programs that support animal welfare efforts in Orange County.

The program’s namesake, Pat Sanford, served with the Animal Protection Society of Orange County for 17 years. She was known as an advocate for a spay and neuter program to combat the county’s pet-overpopulation and expanded the society by creating a wildlife rehabilitation component.

Five years ago, a donation started this grant program and is set to give up to $500 awards for this year and five more.

Animal Services said this about the grant’s namesake in a release:

“Ms. Sanford’s accomplishments are vast and her contributions helped Orange County become one of the leading counties in the state and country for animal placement, recovery, and overall well-being. The grants awarded in her honor will support efforts that exemplify the same dedication and commitment to animal welfare in Orange County.”

The Sanford Grant is available to individuals, groups, and organizations. According to Animal Services, although the recipients do not have to live in Orange County, the funds must be used to aid animal welfare efforts in the county. Examples of past recipients are Hope Animal Rescue, Independent Animal Rescue and NC Therapeutic Riding Center.

Applications for this year’s Pat Sanford Animal Welfare Grant must be received by October 15 and can be emailed to Tenille Fox with Subject Line: Pat Sanford Animal Welfare Grant or mailed to Orange County Animal Services.
