This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.

This week is a lighter one in local government, due largely to the Memorial Day holiday. But it’s still a busy period for town and county leaders, with major budget decisions looming in the next few weeks. Orange County Commissioners have the busiest week, with a budget work session Tuesday and a public hearing Thursday that’s likely to draw a larger crowd; Durham County Commissioners have a work session of their own on Tuesday. And this week’s agenda isn’t entirely budget-focused: the Hillsborough town board could vote Wednesday to impose a temporary moratorium on new AI data centers in town limits, following several other Triangle-area towns and counties that have already done the same thing.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

Orange County Commissioners have a pair of budget-related meetings this week: Tuesday, May 26, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building, and Thursday, May 28, also at 7 p.m. in the Southern Human Services Center. Tuesday’s work session will take a deep dive into specific county departments, including support services, community services, and general government operations. Then Thursday’s meeting is a public hearing, giving residents another chance to weigh in. Click here for links to both agendas.

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 27. The board will continue discussing next year’s budget, but this week’s top agenda item is a proposed 60-day moratorium on new AI data centers and data mining facilities. The board will hold a public hearing on that proposal before a possible vote. Click here for the full agenda.

And the Chapel Hill Town Council is slated to meet Friday, May 29; their agenda will be posted at this link.

Chatham and Durham Counties

Chatham County Commissioners have one meeting this week: the third and final day of a budget workshop, Wednesday, May 27, beginning at 9 a.m. in the Agriculture & Convention Center in Pittsboro. Click here for details.

Durham County Commissioners meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 26. This week’s meeting is primarily budget-focused, with a public hearing on County Manager Claudia Hager’s proposal. Click here to read the agenda in full.

And the Durham school board is slated to meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 28. Their agenda will be available at this link.
