As the Triangle continues getting back to normal from last week’s storm, local government boards are resuming their meeting schedules as well. Perhaps the most-watched agenda item won’t actually be discussed this week: the Chapel Hill Town Council is putting off a planned discussion of the American Legion property to a later date. But the week’s agendas do include some other hot items — including a proposal to restrict protests on Orange County school grounds, a new school board member in Chatham County, and a possible “social district” in downtown Durham.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Chapel Hill Town Council is holding a work session Monday, October 3, at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel Hill Public Library. The agenda included a discussion of what to do with the former American Legion property on Homestead Road, but that agenda item has been deferred to allow for more public comment. Instead, council members will get an update on federal COVID relief funds and an update on discussions about a future splash pad and inclusive playground. Click here for the full agenda.
Orange County Commissioners also meet on Monday, October 3, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough. Commissioners’ top agenda item is a discussion of plans to restrict protests & demonstrations on and around school campuses and public playgrounds: officials began considering a new ordinance after some demonstrations during the last school year, but they’ve gotten pushback on free-speech grounds. Get the full agenda at this link.
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board is also set to meet this week, on Thursday, October 6 at 6:00 p.m. The agenda has not yet been posted, but will be available at this link.
Chatham and Durham Counties
The Chatham County School Board is holding a special meeting Thursday, October 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the George Moses Horton Middle School media center. The purpose of the meeting is to fill the board seat that was left vacant by Melissa Hlavac’s recent resignation: board members will interview the 10 candidates who have applied to fill the seat, then appoint one of the ten to serve out the remainder of Hlavac’s term (which expires in 2024).
In Durham, the City Council is meeting twice: a regular meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 3, and a work session at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 6. Proposed property annexations are tops on the agenda for both meetings — but on Thursday the City Council may approve the creation of a “social district” for downtown Durham, which would allow people to carry alcoholic beverages on the sidewalks. Click here for the agendas.
Durham County Commissioners also meet on Monday, October 3, at 9 a.m. Their work session agenda includes a proposal to expand parental and family leave for county employees, as well as a discussion of legislative goals for the U.S. Congress. Get the full agenda here.
And the Durham school board is scheduled to meet on Thursday, October 6, at 8:30 p.m. The agenda has not yet been posted, but will be available here.
