Chapel Hill has the spotlight this week, as the Town Council opens a legislative hearing on a controversial topic: the proposed Chapel Hill Life Sciences Center on West Franklin Street, which could advance the town’s goal of being an innovation hub but may also displace existing businesses. Also this week, the Orange County School Board will talk redistricting, and the Carrboro Town Council will hear from the public on a proposal to increase residential density – and reduce minimum parking requirements – in certain parts of town.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners is holding a work session at 7 p.m. Monday, October 23. Board members will discuss town sponsorship for an Earth Day event next year and receive a presentation from the Fairview Youth in Action program. Get the full agenda here.
The Carrboro Town Council meets at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24. Tops on the agenda: council members will hold public hearings on a pair of related proposals: a proposal to allow greater residential density in parts of town, and a proposal to reduce the minimum parking-space requirement for new housing developments, particularly along existing transit corridors. The Chapel Hill Town Council meets on Wednesday, October 25, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall. This week’s agenda only has one significant item, but it’s a big one: a legislative hearing on a zoning application for the proposed Chapel Hill Life Sciences Center at 306 W. Franklin Street. (That proposal has drawn controversy because it could displace popular existing businesses, most notably the Purple Bowl.) The council will receive public comments on Wednesday, but they are not expected to make any final decision until at least the end of November. Click here for the full agenda.
And the Orange County School Board meets on Monday, October 23, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building, with an agenda that includes a work session on school redistricting. Get the full agenda at this link.
Chatham and Durham Counties
The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. Monday, October 23, with an agenda that includes a discussion of water quality in the context of a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit recently issued to the city of Asheboro. Click here for the full agenda.
Durham County Commissioners also meet at 7 p.m. Monday, October 23, with an agenda that includes a public hearing on proposed amendments to the county’s Unified Development Ordinance. Get the full agenda at this link.
And the Durham school board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, October 26. Their agenda will be available at this link.
