This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.
The most closely-watched local government meetings this week will likely be just outside of Orange County. In Durham, the City Council is set to vote to create a downtown “social district” where people can drink on the sidewalks; in Chatham, county commissioners are weighing an economic incentives package for VinFast’s big new plant in Moncure. But there’s a lot of activity in Orange County as well – including a continued discussion of school safety at this week’s county commissioners’ meeting, as well as several housing proposals in Chapel Hill.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
First up this week is the Orange County Board of Education, which is holding a retreat on Monday, October 17, at 6 p.m. at their office on King Street in Hillsborough. The agenda includes a discussion of top board priorities, including a shift to equity-based budgeting and an examination of schools’ culture and climate. Get the full agenda at this link.
The Carrboro Town Council meets Tuesday, October 18, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall. This week’s agenda includes a discussion of the town’s bike plan, a presentation on the Orange County Food Council, and an update to the town’s branding guidelines. Click here for a link to the full agenda.
Orange County Commissioners also meet Tuesday, October 18, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough. Commissioners will continue examining school safety in the wake of recent on-campus protests, by discussing the parameters of a new School Safety Task Force. Get the full agenda here.
The Chapel Hill Town Council meets Wednesday, October 19, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall. Among other agenda items, council members will discuss several housing proposals: one for townhomes at 710 N. Estes Drive east of MLK Boulevard, and one for a student housing development at 701 MLK Boulevard. Click here for the full agenda.
