This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.

With just over a month left in the year, local government boards are returning from Thanksgiving and beginning to wrap up their business for 2023. Chapel Hill has the heaviest agenda this week: Town Council members will consider a proposed 12-story mixed-use development on Rosemary Street and the proposed Life Sciences Center on West Franklin Street that’s drawn a lot of attention and controversy. The Orange County School Board also bears watching this week, though technically you won’t be allowed to watch: they’re meeting in closed session in Durham for three straight days.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners is holding a work session at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 27. The board will get an update on the town’s strategic plan and discuss a budget retreat for the next fiscal year. Click here for the full agenda.

The Chapel Hill Town Council meets twice this week. First, the council will meet in closed session at 6 p.m. Monday, November 27, to discuss the acquisition of property downtown, at South Roberson Street and North Basnight Lane near the Courtyard off West Franklin Street. Then the council will hold its regular meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 29, with several big proposals to consider. One proposal is for a 12-story mixed-use development at 157 E. Rosemary Street, with 56 condo units and 3,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space. Council members will also consider the proposed Life Sciences Center at 306 W. Franklin Street; that proposal has drawn fire for threatening existing businesses, most notably the Purple Bowl, but the Purple Bowl’s owners have withdrawn their objection to the project after finding a new space to relocate.

The Chapel Hill Town Council isn’t the only local board that’s meeting in closed session this week: the Orange County School Board is actually meeting three times in closed session, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, November 28-30, “to discuss confidential personnel matters.” All three meetings will begin at 5:25 p.m. (The location is unclear: the district’s website says the meetings will occur at the JB Duke Inn at 3001 Cameron Boulevard in Durham, but the JB Duke Inn is actually located on Science Drive; 3001 Cameron is the address of the Washington Duke Inn.) Finally the Carrboro Town Council has a rare Wednesday meeting this week, 7 p.m. on November 29. Council members will consider adopting a Race and Equity Action Plan for the town; they’ll consider a request for more housing units in a previously-approved mixed-use development on Homestead Road; and they’ll discuss a request to rename a street in honor of former alderman Braxton Foushee. Chatham and Durham Counties

The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners is holding a special meeting to discuss pedestrian connectivity on Thursday, November 30, from 9:30-11:00 a.m. in the town annex office on East Street. There’s no posted agenda, but you can read the meeting notice here.

Durham County Commissioners meet at 7 p.m. Monday, November 27. Tops on the agenda: commissioners will receive an update on food security initiatives during the 2022-23 fiscal year. Click here for the full agenda.
