Budget season comes to a head in Orange County in a big way this week – as the town managers in Chapel Hill and Hillsborough present their respective budget plans, the Carrboro Town Council continues its own budget discussions, and residents get to weigh in on county manager Bonnie Hammersley’s 2024 proposal. In Chapel Hill, this is also the week that council members may vote on the “Complete Community” and “Shaping Our Future” initiatives, which have been the subject of much debate among residents.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
In Hillsborough, town manager Eric Peterson will present his 2024 budget recommendation when the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. Monday, May 8. Click here for the full agenda.
Orange County Commissioners are also focused on the budget this week, with meetings both Tuesday and Thursday. On Tuesday, May 9, County Manager Bonnie Hammersley will present her recommended 2024 budget and capital investment plan, then there will be a public hearing on both. Commissioners will continue the conversation with a budget work session Thursday, May 11, focusing on the county’s two school districts as well as Durham Tech. Both meetings begin at 7 p.m. in Hillsborough’s Whitted Building; click here for links to the meeting agendas.
The Carrboro Town Council is also holding a budget work session at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9. Get the full agenda at this link.
And the Chapel Hill Town Council meets Wednesday, May 10, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall. Interim town manager Chris Blue will present his 2024 budget recommendation, but this agenda has other big points too: in addition to the budget discussion, Council members may vote to approve the much-discussed “Complete Community” and “Shaping Our Future” strategies, which focus on goals including density, housing diversity, transit-oriented development, and more. Only one local board is holding a meeting that’s not budget-focused: the Orange County School Board is holding a work session at 7 p.m. Monday, May 8, with an agenda that includes a student survey on mental health. Get the full agenda at this link.
Chatham and Durham Counties
Budget talks also dominate this week’s agenda in Durham County, as County Manager Kimberly Sowell will present her budget recommendation to Durham County Commissioners at their meeting Monday, May 8, at 7 p.m. Click here for the full agenda.
