It’s budget week in local government: town and county managers will be presenting their 2025-26 budget recommendations in Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Durham, and both Orange and Chatham Counties. In addition, the Chapel Hill Town Council will consider a major affordable-housing proposal, which would bring nearly 200 new apartments just north of downtown.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Carrboro Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 6. Town Manager Patrice Toney will present her recommended budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Also, the council will hear a presentation from the North Carolina League of Municipalities and the Metro Mayors Coalition, and they’ll get the results of last year’s financial audit. Orange County Commissioners also meet Tuesday, May 6, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building. County manager Travis Myren will present his budget recommendation for the next fiscal year; in addition, the board will discuss the use of funds from the national opioid settlement and hold a public hearing on capital investment projects. The Chapel Hill Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 7. Interim town manager Mary Jane Nirdlinger will present her budget recommendation for the upcoming fiscal year, and the council will hold a public hearing (and possibly vote) on a proposed affordable housing development called Hillside Trace, which would add 190 housing units in a six-story building on MLK Boulevard just north of downtown. And the Orange County School Board meets in the Whitted Building at 7 p.m. Monday, May 5. Board members will get updates on the district’s CTE and AIG programs and discuss the use of funds from last year’s bond referendum. Click here for the full agenda.
Chatham and Durham Counties
Chatham County Commissioners meet at 6 p.m. Monday, May 5. County manager Bryan Thompson will present his budget recommendation for the upcoming fiscal year. Get a link to the full agenda here.
The Durham City Council meets twice this week: 7 p.m. Monday, May 5, and then again at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 8. Monday’s meeting includes a final vote to approve next year’s water and sewer rates; Thursday’s meeting includes an annual report from the city’s Racial Equity Commission, as well as a preliminary presentation of next year’s proposed budget. Durham County Commissioners meet at 9 a.m. Monday, May 5. Their agenda includes a presentation from the Sheriff’s Office on the HEART program to promote de-escalation tactics and diverting mental health-related emergency calls away from law enforcement. The board will also receive presentations on stormwater and upcoming transit work plans. View the full agenda at this link.
