This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.

This week in local government is all about next year’s budget. Hillsborough town manager Eric Peterson and Durham county manager Kimberly Sowell will present their respective budget proposals for the first time; Chapel Hill and Pittsboro will hold public hearings on their own budget proposals; and the Carrboro Town Council and Orange County Board of Commissioners will continue their own budget discussions as well. But that’s not all: the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board will consider a “block” scheduling plan for high schools, which has drawn some pushback, and the Durham school board will continue their search for a new superintendent.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. Monday, May 13. Town manager Eric Peterson will present his recommended budget for next year. Get the full agenda at this link.

The Carrboro Town Council will hold a budget work session on Tuesday, May 14, beginning at 7 p.m. Click here for a link to the agenda.

The Chapel Hill Town Council will hold a public hearing on town manager Chris Blue’s recommended budget Wednesday, May 15, beginning at 6 p.m. Click here for the full agenda, which also includes a possible vote to move forward on plans to put a bond referendum on the November ballot.

And the Orange County Board of Commissioners has two budget meetings this week: first, a public hearing on the budget Tuesday, May 14, in the Whitted Building at 7 p.m., followed by a budget work session Thursday, May 16, also at 7 p.m. in the Southern Human Services Center. The focus of the work session will be education: funding for the county’s two school districts as well as Durham Tech. Get the full agenda here.

Finally, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board meets at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 16. The board will hold budget discussions, but their top agenda item is about scheduling: board members will consider approving a new “block” daily schedule for high schools. (District staff made that recommendation after seeking feedback from students, parents, and staff, but some parents have been pushing back against the switch, partly over concerns that it would mean some AP classes would wrap up months before the actual AP test.) Chatham and Durham Counties

The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on their 2025 budget proposal when they meet at 6 p.m. Monday, May 13. Get the full agenda here.

The Chatham County School Board also meets at 6 p.m. Monday, May 13, with budget discussions also on their agenda. Click here to read it in full.

In Durham, County Manager Kimberly Sowell will present her recommended budget when Durham County Commissioners meet at 7 p.m. Monday, May 13. Click here for the full agenda.

County Commissioners will also meet jointly with the Durham School Board this week to hear their budget request. That meeting will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 14; get the full agenda at this link.

The Durham School Board also meets separately on Monday, May 13, to continue their search for the district’s next superintendent. That meeting begins at 5:30 p.m.; get a link to the agenda here.
